Cllr John Murphy, Chairman of the sub-committee on litter with Fermoy Tidy Towns confirmed this week that National Spring Clean Week will be initiated in Fermoy on Saturday, April 6 in Fermoy.

The meeting point will be the Courthouse building at 11am. This is the 15th national Spring Clean Week to get underway and is the largest anti-litter initiative to be run annually in the country. It’s organised by An Taisce.

The event has grown in size and scope over the years with last year’s competition being the largest to date. It’s all down to volunteers giving their time to make their respective areas cleaner, greener and more beautiful places to live in.

Tidy Towns Chairman Noel McCarthy explained that all those taking part would be sent special kits with valuable tips on how to hold a successful clean-up. The kit will also include plastic bags for collecting rubbish and other items to allow recyclable items to be collected.

“Anyone can get involved in the event such as schools, sporting clubs, residents associations, youth groups, voluntary groups etc.,” Cllr McCarthy said.

Tidy Towns PRO Tadhg O’Donovan said “the way people can get involved is quite simple, they register online at www.nationalspringclean.org or call 01-4002219 where all information is available on how to organise an event and with posters provided to promote it, information on recycling and tips on how to continue the improvements.”
