It might sound gruelling to the rest of us, but Mitchelstown man, Noel Considine, enjoyed the 4-day 600km Tour de Munster cycle so much last year, that he's committed to doing it all over again this August.

The popular event which attracts a huge number of cyclists, is organised as a fundraiser for Down Syndrome Ireland by Cork man Paul Sheridan. Noel decided to become involved because his wife Joan used to work with children with disabilities. "We just thought it'd be nice to give something back," he says simply.

Everyone taking part is required to raise as much as possible for DSI and must meet their own expenses separately themselves, in taking part in the event.

Noel raised a whopping €4,500 for DSI last year and, while he's conscious of the difficult economic climate currently, he's aiming to raise as much as he can between now and the start date of August 8. He's delighted to have the sponsorship of Timmy and Anthony Considine of Hanley's butchers in Mitchelstown again this year. They've agreed to match last year's donation of €1,000.

They are also helping with further fundraising by hosting a mini breakfast/coffee morning at their Lower Cork Street premises this Saturday. Running from 9am until 1pm they will serve up some of their renowned sausages and pudding as well as sweet treats such as cakes and buns, tea and coffee in return for donations. Noel is very grateful to them and thanks them and all who have supported him in his efforts to raise money for DSI.

Noel is the only cyclist from Mitchelstown taking part in the event this year though there is a rider from Clogheen. As he continued his training this week, he said of last year, "I enjoyed it, there was a great buzz. It's broken up into groups so you get to know other riders. Everyone got on very well together."
