Despite an empty 36 bed facility being in place in Fermoy, a shortage of respite care is still being reported in the locality.
One individual shared their difficulty in seeking respite care for an elderly family member with The Avondhu this week.
Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the elderly man who suffers from ulcers on his legs, availed of respite care on a quarterly basis, a family member who is caring for him said.
“Before the pandemic, he used to go for respite on a quarterly basis to Fermoy Community Hospital for two weeks and it would give him a bit of a boost. They could give him intensive care there…”
