‘No Dumping’ signage could put a stop to Fermoy dumping

Following a recent spate of dumping in Fermoy, calls have been made for the erection of signage to deter any would-be dumpers.

There was a call this week for signage to be put in place at Liam MacGearailt Place in Fermoy, in an attempt to put a stop to illegal dumping taking place there.

The issue was raised by Cllr Noel McCarthy at this week's meeting of the Fermoy Electoral Area Committee, and he told his fellow councillors that a washing machine was among the items seen dumped down the ravine. Engineer Brendan O'Gorman suggested that cameras may provide the solution.

Last week, The Avondhu covered this issue, as Cllr John Murphy took a stand against the illegal dumping, saying that Fermoy's chances of winning Tidy Towns or IBAL are being jeopardised by these actions.

He told reporter Ellen Lynch that people need to take pride in the town and that people can dispose of electrical items through the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment programme (WEEE).

SIGNAGE NECESSARY

At the same meeting, Cllr McCarthy said that signs needs to be put in place at the picnic area in Corrin to deter people from dumping rubbish. He said that while he is delighted that people are using the area, they need to take their rubbish with them and if we have a good summer like last year's, it is important that the areas are kept clean and free from litter.

In response to both motions, engineer Brendan O'Gorman said that he would refer the concerns to the Environment Department.
