Formerly Parish Priest of Mitchelstown, Fr Michael Fitzgerald has been appointed a Canon of the Cathedral Chapter by Bishop William Crean.

A priest in Mitchelstown for about ten years, Fr Fitzgerald was appointed Parish priest in 2008 and is very well known and respected throughout the community.

Canon Tim O'Leary told The Avondhu they are all delighted with the news and that Fr Fitzgerald is being honoured in this way.

In September, Fr Fitzgerald was appointed as the vicar of the deanery and being appointed Canon would follow on naturally from this.

Fr Gerard Casey, Parish Priest of Mallow and originally from Railway Road, Mitchelstown, referred to the appointment as 'a great privilege for Fr Fitzgerald'.
