Fermoy Lionesses travelled to Abbeyfeale on Sunday, 14th April to play the Munster Women’s Development league final. For a second week in a row the wind dictated play. Fermoy started with the wind at their back and quickly camped in the Abbeyfeale half. Continuous pressure and great drives from the pack and the backs eventually led to Leah Lyons crashing over under the posts to score the opening try. Leah then stepped up to take the conversion which she also slotted. Although Fermoy continued to exert pressure throughout the first half, credit must go to Abbeyfeale who held out showing great defence.
With Fermoy playing against the strong wind in the second half, the pack showed unbelievable courage and commitment to starve Abbeyfeale of the ball. Abbeyfeale kept trying to apply pressure through the backs and the wings but to their credit the Fermoy backs held strong. It wasn’t until five minutes from time that Abbeyfeale broke the line, crossing over at the wing due to pressure from the backs forcing a tough conversion.
This was then missed by Abbeyfeale, making the scoreline 7-5 to Fermoy with a few minutes remaining. Abbeyfeale tried to press forward again but Fermoy’s defence was not to be beaten a second time. The pack forced yet another turnover and with time up kicked the ball into touch to secure victory, with players and supporters flooding the pitch.
There was a great celebration when Denise Hickey, chairperson of the Munster Women’s committee, presented captain Deirdre Purfield with the cup. Thank you to Abbeyfeale for a great game and the Munster branch for a great league. Fermoy now look forward to the play-off game in the coming weeks against Buccaneers, Connaught Development League winners, to decide promotion to division 2.

J3 CUP SEMI-FINAL
Fermoy 8 Cork Transport 12
Fermoy bowed out of the J3 cup with a home defeat to Cork Transport last Sunday. Playing with a strong wind in the first half Fermoy opened the scoring out wide with a well taken try by full back Martin O’Brien. Peter Skuse and Tom Griffin were again excellent in the line outs against very experienced Transport jumpers. As half-time approached Fermoy were unable to take advantage of the conditions and missed several chances to build up a healthy lead.
Transport came out strong in the second half pinning Fermoy deep inside their own half. The Transport pressure paid off from a maul to score in the corner, this was excellently converted by their out half. The Fermoy pack responded with Oisin Hegarty, Ken Raggott and Mark Cotton gaining the hard yards to get back inside the Transport twenty two. Fermoy broke down the blind with Cillian Tobin just failing to score in the corner. The forwards again did the hard work to get us into a scoring position and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts which was converted by Peter Skuse to give Fermoy a one point lead with fifteen minutes remaining. Transport came back at Fermoy using the wind to keep Fermoy deep inside their own half, form a maul their out half broke down the blind and crossed over for the winning score of the game.
We still have the final of the McCarthy cup to look forward to date and opposition to be confirmed so let’s get big numbers up training for the last game of the season. We would also like to congratulate the ladies on winning the league with a hard fought 7 – 5 win over Abbeyfeale. Well deserved.
