I recall with fond memories the Fermoy Show of 1958 when this writer was just 12 years of age. The show was held at the showgrounds in the Oliver Plunkett Hill district, which is the home ground of Fermoy RFC today.

The show began early. The Long Bar (O.P. Hill) opened at 10.30am. A steady stream of customers frequented the bar all day. It was a Wednesday as usual in sunny July.

The cattle were judged pretty early - bulls, cows, heifers and calves. Paul Barry’s (Sheepwalk, Grange) red roans won comfortably. Paul was the well-known Grange sportsman, a GAA footballer and athlete; he broke away from Fermoy, unfortunately. Fermoy GAA needs nearby Grange.

The dogs were judged in the afternoon. Thomas Lawrenson’s ‘Rover’, a rather dumpy sheepdog, failed to win a prize, contrary to expectations. I am sure Dinny McGrath (Patrick Street) was a judge. This elderly man sold leads, etc in his shop which was located next door to Mellerick’s (Chemist Shop).

The show jumping was a pleasure to watch - Mrs Dawn Rose with a net over her face jumping spars, which were a foot from the ground. The ‘big guns’ were Harry Freeman-Jackson and Virginia Freeman-Jackson from Mallow. I think they were 'winners all right'.

The cakes and jams were judged by Mrs Anne Mellerick (Patrick Street) whow as on the committee. I’ve no idea who won the cake competition, but my good friend Mrs Bridie (Sheehy) Maunsell of O.P. Hill, made a clean sweep of the jams. A bed in Heaven to you, Bridie!

A well organised show, thank you Fermoy Show Committee for what was a great day out!
