Local TD Kevin O’Keefe has said the Government’s decision not to restore the Laneway Improvement Scheme (LIS) in Budget 2017 will put further pressure on local authority budgets.

For communities in remote areas, the growing degradation of these important connections requires a small but important investment, the Fianna Fáil TD said.

“This is a very poor decision by the Government and puts further pressure on local authorities’ discretionary income. The Government expects Cork County Council to pay for the repair of laneways from its existing budgets, which are already under pressure,” he added.

Mr O’Keefe said there are hundreds of laneways across Cork that urgently need remedial work carried out on them to make them safe.

“The poor state of rural roads and laneways are some of the biggest concerns that people in East Cork have. Not only does it affect local residents, it will have an impact on tourists visiting the area,” he concluded.
