For the last four years, shoppers locally have been able to donate food items to Cork Penny Dinners at Christmas time, through an initiative run by Ballyhooly’s Emer Buckley and John Ryan.

On Monday, Emer and John were in Riordan’s SuperValu in Fermoy to collect a substantial donation of food, which they dropped directly to Cork Penny Dinners on Little Hanover Street in the city.

As well as Riordan’s SuperValu, donations have been collected from Costcutter in Ballyhooly, Downey’s Spar in Castleltownroche, Roche’s Spar in Mitchelstown and Farrell’s SuperValu in Mitchelstown.

Founded as a soup kitchen during the Famine, Cork Penny Dinners serves over 1,000 meals each week, growing from around 150 meals two years ago.
