A stunning photo collage of the River Blackwater shows the amount of litter and rubbish that presently line its banks and ditches.

The photographs, taken recently by John O’Connell, demonstrate that the local rubbish problem extends to our local rivers as well.

Explaining the photograph, Mr Connell said: “The shots were taken below the viaduct in Fermoy. I don’t think it’s caused simply by people throwing litter into the river, but by them throwing it over ditches and on roads, and then it ends up getting picked up by the river during floods. I’ve never seen it as bad as it is now.”

The Avondhu understands that a major river clean-up, organised by Cork County Council, is to be carried out between Mallow and Fermoy later in the year.
