Teenagers were out to impress at the weekend, as both Valerie Clancy and Sean Leonard of Mitchelstown Golf Club recorded impressive successes.

Valerie won the Munster Senior Ladies Open Golf Championship in Waterville, while Sean won the Ford Junior Scratch trophy in Muskerry.

15-year-old Valerie is a Junior Certificate student in the Presentation Secondary School.

“This is her best achievement to date,” her mother Nora told The Avondhu.

Nora added that it is a challenge for Valerie to juggle her studies and love of golf.

Valerie will be competing in the Irish Ladies Open in the Island Golf Club in Dublin on Thursday.

“This is what she loves to do and she’d like to go as far as she can,” Nora added.

Meanwhile, it was also a great weekend for Sean Leonard in Muskerry.

The 16-year-old is in Transition Year in the CBS Secondary and his uncle Clem, who was his caddy for the competition, as a birthday present for his 16th recently, said that this is a highlight for Sean.

“His goal was just to qualify, so he was delighted,” Clem told The Avondhu.

Sean is also on the Munster Under 16 panel and this will be a big help to him there, Clem added.
