SADNESS AT ARTHUR’S PASSING

A larger than life figure in Fermoy, former town councillor and community activist Arthur Dowling will be laid to rest in Kilcrumper Old Cemetery on this Thursday.

The passing of one of Fermoy’s most colourful and ebullient characters will be the cause of sadness for very many people. A proud Fermoy man, his time working in the local hospital brought Arthur in to contact with many old characters. Their accounts of Fermoy in the early 1900s made for fascinating listening and as a result Arthur’s collection of anecdotes, local history, tall tales and yarns was vast.

There were run-ins but never serious falling outs, even those who didn’t see eye to eye with him could never question the sincerity of his motives. Arthur confounded many with his ability to overcome illness; above all else he was resilient - where lesser human beings would have succumbed, he fought on and on. In the case of Arthur Dowling’s life very little remained undone.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Bridie, son Leonard and all other relations and friends.
