WHEN NED MET ZIGGY

Amongst the normal hype surrounding the battle for the seasonal number one, an unlikely song about Cork East TD Ned O’Keeffe has grabbed the Christmas showbiz headlines, writes Joe Leogue.

Based on the David Bowie classic ‘Rebel Rebel’ the song describes Mr O’Keeffe’s recent disputes with the Government which saw him skip a series of high profile Dail votes and ultimately leave the Fianna Fail parliamentary party.

‘Rebel Rebel Cork TD’ includes quotes from Mr O’Keeffe including his infamous claim that the press were intimidating him at a protest outside the gates of the Galtee factory this year. The song, which came to public attention in national papers this week, has been afforded airplay on Cork’s 103FM but it is believed that the novelty tune will not be released as a single.

Ned O’Keeffe told The Avondhu he was “excited” by the homage. David Bowie, however, was unavailable for comment.
