FERMOY - YOU DID US PROUD

Dear Sir,

I’m writing to congratulate the Fermoy youth soccer team, on their wonderful achievement in reaching the last eight in the FAI Youth Cup. Some people may not be aware that it’s one of the largest knockout tournaments in Europe. They were beaten on Sunday by 1-0 by St. Patrick’s Athletic youths.

The one aspect of the game was the high standard of skill the Fermoy team displayed, also their level of fitness and discipline on the field. The result was in doubt right up to the final whistle. This was against a League of Ireland nursery team.

The last time a Fermoy team reached the last eight in national competition is now 50 years ago when Fermoy United played Virginians of Dublin in the FAI Junior Cup. It was great to see the Fermoy people turning out in such large numbers to support these young lads who are keeping the great tradition of soccer alive and well in Fermoy.

Well done also to the back up team and the Fermoy committee on their wonderful work all year. I would love to see the youth team parading with the Fermoy Soccer Club in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Liam Nolan,
‘Sunville’, Duntaheen Road, Fermoy

FOCUS NOW ON FERMOY TOWN COUNCIL

Dear Editor,

I welcome the fact that last week the Fermoy Town Council validated the biggest planning applicant in its history as a local authority with the proposed ˆ100 million development on the old Mart site. With the positive consultative process engaged in to date by the Shipton Group the focus is now firmly placed on the town council. Following representations to the town manager I am optimistic that the local authority will not be found wanting in dealing with the relevant planning application, as there is an obvious obligation on the town council apart from the desire of the community as a whole to ensure that the opportunities that arise as a result of the proposed development are realised sooner rather than later.

Yours sincerely,
Cllr Tadhg O’Donovan, Peace Commissioner, Fermoy

DUNTAHANE PARK RESIDENTS RESPOND TO AVONDHU ARTICLE

Dear Editor,

In response to the article published in The Avondhu on March 6th, 2008, a meeting was held by the residents of Duntahane Park and we wish to make the following comments:

1: Duntahane Road was used for the development of Duntahane Park since the mid-nineties and vehicular access was allowed for more than ten years.

2. About one year ago, the vehicular access from Duntahane Road to Duntahane Park was closed and the relief road was opened. Duntahane Road became a cul de sac for vehicles.

3. Cork County Council built a footpath from the relief road to Duntahane Road and a pedestrian crossing with speed ramp and flashing lights was installed. This footpath was recently improved from the original tarmac path to a new concrete path.

4. The pedestrian access is used regularly by the residents of Duntahane Park, where there are currently 25 children living. Some of the children walk to/from school using the pedestrian path. The path means their journey is not only shorter, but also safer, as they are not on the main road and they are in a built up area.

5. The residents of Duntahane Park are very concerned about the litter and anti-social issues which are caused by a minority of people who use the pedestrian access.

Yours sincerely,
Tom McAuliffe, One Cool Cat, Fermoy B Footballers (1976)
