MITCHELSTOWN RUGBY CLUB

- New season opens-

Following the success of our league sides last year, the silverware brought home by the mini rugby boys, and last but definitely not least, the success of our Munster under 17 representatives, we are ready to embark on a new season with great enthusiasm.

TRAINING AND COACHING

Our pitch at Currabowen is in great shape, with a good covering of grass, and facilities for players have been greatly improved there. That is why we will be training there this week, with under 14 and under 16 on Wednesday evening at 7.30. The big guns of under 18 and under 20 will train Friday night this week at 7pm.

Both times mean on the pitch, so please come early and be ready to go with your coaches at those times. Any older former players or aspiring coaches will be welcome to come on Friday night, both to assist with their skills, and to promote the possibility of an adult junior team startup. It cannot happen without you!!!

There is some surplus cut grass on the field, so we would appreciate if players could bring rakes, as we cannot start training until the grass is removed. Mini rugby will not be starting for a week or two, but registration is essential so that we can plan to cater for the numbers.

REGISTRATION

Registration of players will take place on Saturday next at the Ozanam Centre, (Vincent de Paul HQ), Thomas Street, Mitchelstown, starting at 10.30am. Fees will be as last year, and include registration with the Irish Rugby Football Union. New members need to bring 2 passport photos, and will have to fill in an application/consent form.

In line with our insurers policy, no player will be allowed to take the field unless they are members of the club, as this could expose them and the club to liability, in the event of an incident or accident

FUNDRAISING

Our annual street collection will take place on Saturday, 27th September. Because of the recent improvements made, our funds are depleted, and this event will help to raise cash to run the club for the coming year.

We will be manning at least six pivotal points in the town from 10am to dusk, and all parents and older members will be expected to give an hour or two to assist.

BARBEQUE AND PRIZE NIGHT

Our prize night was held in TO Park with the proud parents and recipients to the fore. Our thanks to all our sponsors, especially Supermac’s, Horgan’s Deli Supplies, Finches and Tipperary Water, Justin Finn, and the demon barbecue man Pat Cole, who made sure that everyone was fed well.

HEINEKEN CUP VISIT

We have been promised a visit by some member(s) of the Munster Heineken Cup winning heroes, for members to see and touch, and maybe take a few photos of the cup and players. Details will be announced at training only.

CONGRATULATIONS

We were all overjoyed to hear of the safe arrival of Aisling Ellen Meade, born to our super coach Marie, and her husband John on 20th August last. Aisling weighed in just short of 8lbs, or 3.6kg. All of us, players and officers at the club, wish them happy and healthy times, and look forward to seeing Marie back soon on the field. Wonder what position Aisling Ellen will play?

BALLYLANDERS AFC SOCCER

- Momentum builds to sponsored climb -

With two weeks and three days to the day of the mountain climb, many sponsored walkers can be seen out and about wearing in their walking boots. The anticipation of the climb is hotting up, as many are eager to conquer that fine peak of ‘Galtymore’, together.

As they are doing it for charity as well as fun and fitness, many are looking for sponsors for the groups that we are raising money for. With only three weeks to gather sponsors and organise the climb an organising committee gathered at MacDermott’s, Ballylanders, and got down to work.

With the Ballylanders and District Special Needs Group and Ballylanders Soccer Club who will be co-ordinated in the climb by the Ballyhoura Walking Bears on the 13th of September.

It is not too late to join the climb as you can pick up a sponsor card from DJ Noonan or call him on 086-8550-299. If you would just like to sponsor and haven’t been asked most shops and pubs in Ballylanders have cards so please sponsor generously.

On Saturday 13th September the sponsored walkers will meet at the Day Care Centre on that morning, 8.45am and travel together to Kilbehenny village opposite the Post Office, where we will be lead to parking. We are advised to travel together as parking is limited. From there we will we will gather at ‘Kings-yard walk and Climb’ to leave for the walk at 9.30am.

Walkers are advised to bring walking boots, water proofs clothing (that can be removed if necessary), maybe a reflective jacket if you have one and of course a small snack and drink.

The walk will take between one and a half hours to one three quarters up the hill and quicker down. This is really a walk for adults to be safe.

BALLY'S YOUTH TEAM HAVE MIXED FORTUNES THIS WEEK

The week started with a friendly on Thursday, 21st August with a friendly against Park Utd, Mitchelstown and a good run out and a lot of goals. The goals were from Pat O’Donnell (2), Peter Lane, Mike O’Donnell and one other. The score at the end of this was 3-7 to Ballylanders Youths, with a league game to come on Sunday.

On Sunday, 31st August Ballylanders Youths were away to St. Patricks of Patrickswell. After a hard fought, back and forth type of half the thirty seventh minute was the time of the first goal, when St. Patricks took the lead. (1-0) Then in the sixty seventh minute added another. (2-0) The response had been good and only the run of play up to this point had stopped the response coming good as Pat Brouder in the seventy forth minute scored. (2-1)

Unfortunately as Ballylanders chased the equaliser they were eventually caught looking for a goal and one was scored against them with the last kick of the game. They had a go though, this performance was an improvement on last weeks and the same fight and passion is expected from them next game.

TALLOW GAA

- Hats or flags -

‘T’was the 1940s when a young newly married couple left their home in the West of Ireland to seek their fortune and make a new home for themselves somewhere in the broader expanse of our own green land.

From an impoverished part of our land at the time their thoughts were not of a boat to England or America but a little house in the country where there was a bit of work to be had and them to remain in the land of their birth.

He nineteen years and she but eighteen, their dreams and aspirations were little different to any young pair starting out in life today to gain employment, have their own home and rear a family.

Over 40 years later, over a pint of stout in a local porter house here in Tallow, one of our now dearly departed inquisitive residents asked that same man - “ How did ye happen to settle in Tallow all those years ago?

“Well” says he in reply, “We left Connemara by horse and cart on the first stage of our journey, then got a lift in an old Austin car as far as the railway station and with no particular place in mind headed south. Every place the train stopped there seemed to be houses nearby and with nothing in our minds but countryside we didn’t get off at any one of them until we arrived at Tallow Road Station. Not a house in sight and plenty of trees and green fields everywhere.

“Lismore five miles, Tallow 21/2 miles” says the stationmaster “and so off we set to walking the shorter of the two. We stopped at the top of Tallow Hill and rested awhile. The valley and the river looked splendid and peaceful below but above all I turned and looked at herself and said - Sarah, there’s some mighty big headstones down there in that graveyard, there must be money hereabouts and I think we’ve found our place to set down the roots”!

And so it was that Hugh and Sarah Coughlan spent the rest of their lives in their beloved Lisfinney still overlooking the beautiful valley and the banks of the Bride. Little did they both know then but that same quaint little railway station would, in the ensuing year, would be the starting point for many an epic journey to the hurling fields of Ireland whenever and wherever the royal blue and brilliant white of Waterford hurling was on show.

Hurling in Tallow at that time was as is now the first choice of many, but equally there were players who loved the football but, as ever struggled to always find a strong outfit.

When hearing of the new arrival from Connemara and in particular from Mayo, the ever resident band of selectors approached Hugh and asked him to throw in his lot with them and tog out on the following Sunday. Not being a man to sell himself cheaply the selectors headed back down Lisfinney Hill rubbing the palms of their hands with glee.

They had, it seemed, secured the services of one of the finest footballers in all the land - and centre field at that, just where a tour-de-force was badly needed.

An over abundant measure of embrication oil and poitin was massaged into their new protege on the Sunday to leave nothing to chance and as promised within a minute of the throw in, the man from Mayo had the ball over the bar.

The thunderous applause - from the opposition on being reminded by one of his colleagues that Tallow were playing into the other goal the reply was as swift as ever, “How was I supposed to know what colour ye are, sure ain’t they green and red”! and so the legend of “Mayo” was born, or so it is said.

How am I supposed to know, sure I wasn’t even a garsun then. Whatever about the rights and wrongs of the football game they were both forever after affectionately known as “Mayo” and Mrs. Coughlan.

They both worked hard as planned but their true labour of love was the making and selling of the blue and white of Waterford and if Sarah was the one who did most of the sewing and stitching, Hugh was the public face if you like.

“Hats or flags, get your colours “how much for the hats sir” says a little boy, “two bob” says Mayo “but here’s one for your sister for nothing” I witnessed that one myself - what price nature?

But that was the man. Good humour a word for everyone (not always fact) and more coins rattling in the suit pockets that a money box. Crepe Paper hats and the blue running down your jaw if it rained, no refunds mind you.

“T’was all part of the day. As synonymous as Pecker Dunne and his banjo on the bridge in Thurles on Munster final day, Hugh was an integral part of what hurling is all about. And so the tradition continues and the baton has been passed to a new generation. The banter and the buzz is as great as ever. A new generation of heros to follow.

The trains from Tallow Road Station down the line are long silent, the crepe paper has be upgraded but the colour and the vibrancy is as loud as it was then. Harry, Babs, Josie, Mary Curley, Francis Pratt, Con Ryan and many such others remain a strong link to those bygone days, they’ll be in Croke Park on Sunday again as they have been before, the tradition lives on.

So best of luck to all our mighty hurlers who will do us proud on Sunday. You carry a great burden but an equally great honour. Go neiri and bother libh go leir and as you all ramble down Jones Road and happen on a flag seller cast your mind back o the cottage in Lisfinney and who knows who’ll be seated alongside you at the match. You may not see them but they’ll be there. “Hats and flags, get your colours here and wear them proudly”.

FINAL COUNTDOWN

The county is festooned with banners and buntings in anticipation of the big day and it is a credit to all concerned. Kevin Tobin informs me that he will be doing his rounds of the county to select the best area. We would like to thank all who put up flags, banners or buntings.

It was a combined community effort involving Tallow Area Credit Union, The community council, members of the Fire Service and county council, Tallow GAA Club as well as many individuals and business premises.

I have been asked also by James Murray and Aidan Kearney to thank all the people in the locality and indeed the county for their support and good wishes. The two lads are exemplary young sportsmen and fine role models for our young people. They are a credit to themselves, their families, their club and the community in general.

Tallow has a proud tradition of service to the county colours and Ringo and James carry on that fine tradition. We are very proud of them and wish them and the team the best of luck on Sunday. Adh mor iomanai na Deise.

JUNIOR ‘B’ HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

The junior ‘B’ team face St Catherines on Saturday evening in the semi-final of the East Cork hurling championship. This team has worked hard at training all year and have done very well in the league. Saturday’s game is on in Dungourney and it is hoped that they will be well supported.

MINOR ‘B’ FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Castlelyons 0-12 St. Catherines 1-11
The minor football team played Kiltha Og in the first round of the championship on Wednesday, 27th August. Having concentrated more on hurling as they contested the hurling final the week before they went into this game a bit out of practice. However, in the early stages of the game they dominated but failed to put up the scores. In the twelfth minute Kiltha Og got through to get a goal to put them in the lead 1-1 to 0-3. Darren Tobin levelled the game with a point from a free two minutes later. Kiltha Og were now playing with more confidence and went on to put six points over without reply. The score at half time was 0-6 to 1-8 in favour of Kiltha Og. In spite of Castlelyons outscoring the opposition in the second half by two points it was not enough. The difference at the end was the goal. It was a disappointing result for both the players and management. Well done to all concerned.

Minor Team: Alan Barry, Conor McNulty, Colm Barry, Conor Healy, Brian Carroll, Colm Spillane, Noel McAuliffe, Darren Tobin (0-8), Ronan Fenton, Robert Feeney (0-2), Aidan O’Sullivan (0-1), Eoin Maye(0-1), Alan O’Regan, Shane O’Sullivan, Chris Cotter. Subs used: Darragh Lawlor. Subs: Eoin Barry, William Daly, Darragh Conran, Ian Barry, Padraig O’Regan, Aidan O’Regan, Stephen Joyce.

GLANWORTH UNITED

- Good away point -

We travelled to Passage last Thursday night for our 1st league game of the season and came away with a good 2-2 draw. We started well and were awarded a penalty after 10mins when their full back handled inside the box.

And up stepped Keel (The Real Deal) Cotter to send the keeper the wrong way 1-0, and with some good saves by Danny and some good defending by Noel Cashman and Val O’Donnell we kept it at 1-0, but just before the break their player broke the offside trap and slotted home for 1-1 at the break. T

hey came at us strong in the 2nd half we held firm but their midfielder hit a screamer from 25 yards to put them 2-1 up with 20mins left. We could have folded at this stage as they were well on top but we kept plugging away and got a lovely goal with 10mins left when Brian Cashman broke through and shot low and hard past their keeper to leave the final score 2-2.
