While there has been a steady rise in the amount of rubbish being illegally dumped across The Avondhu area recently, such incidents are normally small and confined to rural roads and isolated areas far from populated areas.

Not so with the latest noted act of dumping, where 19 bags of rubbish was dumped just off the N72 and 1km outside the town of Fermoy.

Rubbish 2

The dumping site in question is located along a rural road past Fermoy Community Hospital, 30 metres from its junction with the N72 on the Fermoy to Tallow road.

Councillor Noel McCarthy confirmed that Cork County Council were made aware of the incident and will be searching through the bags in the hope of identifying the culprit.

‘NAME & SHAME’

“I’ve had a number of people onto me about it, they’re shocked and so am I. If anyone has any information about the identity of those responsible, I would encourage them to contact either the gardaí or else Cork County Council.

These people must be named and shamed, it’s the only way to put an end to such behaviour.”

Equally, Tadhg O’Donovan, PRO of Fermoy Tidy Towns, said that this incident demonstrates the growing problem with dumping in the area. “The fact that it’s just a kilometre outside the town centre signifies how daring these people have become. It’s hard to comprehend such actions and it’s important that those responsible are named and shamed.”
